New ’12 Avenger R/T to debut at New York show

April18

Chrysler Group LLC today announced the new 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T will make its worldwide auto show debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, starting with media days on April 20.

With exceptional V-6 fuel economy, the new Dodge Avenger is the perfect sedan for the customer who wants an enthusiastic driving performance at a great value. With a stiffened suspension, best-in-class 283 horsepower engine, center-mounted tachometer and performance-inspired interior and exterior design, the 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T ups the driving fun factor.

“The Avenger R/T makes driving a mid-size car a really fun, engaging experience,” Ralph Gilles, President and CEO—Dodge Brand, said. “The Avenger R/T offers performance design cues both inside and out, as well as unique handling characteristics and a sport-tuned suspension. It’s a vehicle that is ready to earn its stripes as part of the Dodge performance family of vehicles.”

In 2011, Dodge introduced the new Dodge Avenger mid-sized sedan. With more standard features than other vehicles in the segment—an all-new interior, a new powertrain, including one of Ward’s “10 Best Engines,” the best-in-class 283 horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle, a significantly updated suspension that results in exceptional driving dynamics and an updated design—the Dodge Avenger is a vehicle packed with value and a style all its own.

The new for 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T model builds on all the improvements made to the 2011 model giving mid-size sedan customers an unmatched driving experience along with Dodge attitude. Consumers who visit the auto show can check out the new Avenger R/T model April 22 through May 1.

Dodge engineers amplified the driving experience by giving the Dodge Avenger R/T a superlative powertrain and performance-tuned suspension. The 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T is powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle, which has an EPA fuel economy rating of 19 mpg city and 29 mpg highwayTo make it stay true to the Dodge R/T DNA, engineers tuned the Avenger’s suspension specifically to the R/T model. They increased roll stiffness by 18 percent, and spring rates by 17 percent in the front and more than 12 percent in the rear. Front strut damping rates are increased 15 percent, rear strut damping rates are increased almost 20 percent and the rear stabilizer bar diameter is 2 mm larger, increased from 19 mm to 21 mm. The suspension changes result in a spirited, performance sedan driving experience. With best-in-class 283 horsepower, and still delivering 29 miles per gallon on the highway, the Avenger R/T is unmatched in its class.

The Dodge Avenger R/T model exterior has unique exterior design elements, including a unique body-color grille with the Dodge badge, menacing black headlamp background, the “war paint” R/T decal on the front quarter panel and unique 18-in. painted aluminum wheels. The performance elements carry through to the rear of the vehicle with a spoiler and the “R/T” badge.

The interior of the 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T sports distinctive Aunde fabric with Z stripe fabric inserts, red stitching and aggressive leather-trimmed bolsters that hold drivers and passengers firmly in their seats when they put the Avenger to the test. The front seats are heated and sport an “R/T” graphic stitched in red on the front headrests. Drivers will notice a cockpit unlike other Avenger models. It features a unique gauge cluster with a center-mounted tachometer with the “R/T” graphic and SRT-inspired brake and accelerator pedal pads. The steering wheel is wrapped in perforated leather with red accent stitching. A Boston Acoustic sound system compliments the standard 276-watt touchscreen entertainment center with a 30-gigabyte hard drive. The excellent sound system and remote start are some of the many standard features on the Avenger R/T model.

The Dodge Avenger mid-size sedan is a 2011 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick, and provides customers an abundance of standard safety and high-tech features designed to keep drivers connected with their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Standard safety features include advanced multi-stage front passenger air bags, front seat side air bags, electronic stability control with electronic traction control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, supplemental side curtain air bags and LATCH child seat anchor system.

For 2011, the Dodge Avenger mid-size sedan is available in four different configurations, and features a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The Avenger Express, Avenger Mainstreet, Avenger Heat and Avenger Lux are available in Dodge dealerships now. The 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T model will start arriving in dealerships in the third quarter of 2011.

The Dodge Avenger is built at the Sterling Heights (Mich.) Assembly Plant.

DG-Spec Scion Team Dominates WERC Season Opener

DG-Spec Scion Team Wins WERC Season Opener in Dominating Fashion
Great Teamwork Results in Win Almost Three Laps Ahead of Second Place

LONG BEACH, Calif. — This past weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, drivers Dan Gardner and Scott Webb with a crew of Sean Morris, David Fredrickson, Aidan Spraic, and Shawn Meze, again proved how dominant the team can be. The DG-Spec Scion tC E1 endurance racer crossed the finish line almost three laps in front of the second place BMW.

With 82 laps completed, the team also took seventh overall (in a field of 30), and would have podiumed in the higher, ultra-fast E0 class. The team was actually on the same lap as both the sixth and fifth place overall cars, an E0 and an unlimited ES competitor.

“Endurance racing requires that every member of the team be strong,” said team owner and driver, Dan Gardner. “The crew performed fantastically. I am proud of how proficient we are in the pits. You could have drivers going three seconds a lap faster than the competition, but if you get hung up for several minutes in the pits, your lead can evaporate. Even with the decisive win, we’re not going to get complacent; we know there will be tough competition at the 25-hour in December.”

On Saturday morning the team would get to practice and qualify, but the session was combined, meaning there would be one precious 20-minute session before the race. Gardner managed to qualify the car on the pole with a 2:02.4 lap time, a whopping second and a half faster than the second place qualifier.

In testing, Gardner and Webb were just two tenths of a second apart, so the team was encouraged by the consistency. The crew was practicing deep into Saturday, as driver changes and fuel stops were timed on a stopwatch until targets were met.

“You have to practice like you compete,” said crew chief, Sean Morris. “We practice until we have it down. If there’s time that can be saved, we’re going to find it. We’ll continually look to make things better, faster, more efficient with every race.”

The race ended up starting a bit after 6 p.m., with Gardner taking the first shift. As the cars came onto the front straight, the starter called off the start, and the cars circulated around one more time. Next time around the green flew. Gardner got a great jump, passing several cars as he dropped the hammer hard, and slipped through along the far inside of the track.

He trailed an orange, winged E0 BMW. After giving chase, a couple laps in Gardner would manage to get around the BMW going into Off-Ramp. He found himself situated in a pocket, and would open up a ten second lead just ten laps into the race.

On lap 15, the team warned of an oil spill in turn 1, as a Mustang had blown its engine. Gardner mistakenly thought the crew was referring to Sunset, and he crawled the Scion through the turn. As he charged into the next turn, the car instantly got sideways and Gardner immediately realized the huge mistake, as the car spun as the loaded tires hit the oil. With as much countersteer as he could manage, Gardner desperately tried to regain control as the Scion hurtled toward the disabled Mustang. The car pitched sideways, and by sheer luck the car would miss the Ford by just inches, coming to a stop in the dirt.

Gardner gathered it back up and onto the track, just as the second place E1 BMW zipped by. The track by then had gone to full course yellow, and Gardner chased the BMW around preparing for the restart that was eventually to come. Just a lap or two later, the starter went to green, before the Scion had even gotten onto the front straight.

Gardner hit the gas, and he pinned the Scion to the rear of the BMW. At this point the race would take on the feel of a sprint race battle, as the two cars battled. Eventually Gardner would get around the BMW, as he had a run coming out of Sunrise. With the Scion out in front, an ES Porsche would storm up the inside going into Cotton Corners. Gardner drove into the dirt and then back on track, and the BMW would take the lead back again.

From there it was down to traffic management, as the two cars sliced through slower cars. Sometimes the BMW would get the better roll of the dice, other times the Scion would come out ahead. The cars were nose to tail repeatedly.

The DG-Spec team was on schedule for a pitstop soon, as they wouldn’t risk a second fuel starve bobble. Gardner let the BMW go as he slowed to enter the pits. As he came to a stop, he popped the belts, and jumped out of the car as soon as his radio was disconnected.

The crew was already deep into their fueling, as Webb jumped in. Moments later, the fuelers would finish, and just 10 seconds later, the driver change was complete, as Webb drove the Scion down pit lane, careful to heed the 25 mph speed limit. The team had no spills, no infractions, and it turns out the lead BMW would pit not long after the Scion.

Webb put his head down and again showed that both drivers were within a tenth or two, giving the team a solid edge over many teams whose drivers had significantly different pace. A couple laps in, the Scion had regained the lead, but there was a three-way battle between the Scion, BMW sedan, and BMW Z3, all in the E1 class.

Webb clicked off consistent laps, but as the track was enveloped in darkness, he found that two of the main driving lights were not functioning. With two still working plus the low beams, he had to rely on his knowledge of the course to keep things clean and on track.

“I tried to hit the switch a few times, but the main lights just wouldn’t come back on,” said Webb. “The two big lights that were working were aimed a bit too high, and the low beams were sort of just band aids. At that point there’s nothing you can do except just adapt. Fortunately I have more miles here than just about anywhere.”

Despite the BMWs in chase, Webb stayed out in front and began to pull away. As the Scion bobbled for fuel, the crew knew they’d have to do one more full fuel load to be on the safe side. The Scion came in, and the crew filled with great speed, though they took a tiny bit more caution to not incur any kind of penalty, as by this point the Scion was out considerably in front of the competition.

As many competitors’ lap times started to get longer, Webb did a great job of keeping the Scion on boil. The tires were doing well, and weren’t giving up much speed. By the time the BMWs had to do a second stop, the victory was all but guaranteed if the car remained bulletproof and Webb kept his composure.

Indeed, at the three-hour mark, and with 82 laps, Webb brought the Scion across the finish line. The 18 car again held true to its old faithful reputation. Though a bit dirty from an off, there was zero contact, as the Scion finished unscathed.

The team now prepared for the second and third round of the WERC series, a 1+2 hour race at Thunderhill Raceway in Northern California on May 15. Photos and video from the Buttonwillow event can be found on DG-Spec’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/DG-Spec/202937143062874

McLaren is coming to FIA GT3!

February12

Several major international GT series have announced their calendars for the 2011 season.
The FIA GT3 European Championship will replace success ballast with ‘compensation times’ (added to the minimum pit stop duration) for 2011. Balance of Performance weights remain. The full calendar is:
May 7/8, Algarve, Portugal
June 4/5, Silverstone, Great Britain
July 2/3, Navarra, Spain
July 16/17, Paul Ricard, France
August 20/21, Smolensk Ring, Russia
October 15/16, Zandvoort, Netherlands
An important new GT3 machine is due to hit the track this year in the form of a race version of the McLaren MP4-12C. From 2012, McLaren and CRS Racing will supply and support a limited number of cars for European-based privateers, but as part of the development program, McLaren and CRS Racing will compete at a limited number of European GT races in 2011.
Andrew Kirkaldy, team principal, CRS Racing said: “It is a rare opportunity to work with a company like McLaren and we are proud to be involved. Together, we aim to produce the highest quality GT car on the grid. The level of engineering experience at McLaren is unparalleled and this will be reflected in the 12C GT3. One of the most important aspects of this program will be customer service and for that reason we will be building a limited number of cars at a competitive price. The result will be an incredible GT car with manageable running costs and good residual value that will provide its owner with an unrivalled experience.”
Meanwhile the FIA GT1 World Championship will visit Germany’s Sachsenring for the first time in 2011, joining the ADAC Masters Weekend, which is one of the most popular national GT events on the German motorsport calendar, attracting over 32,000 spectators in 2010. The season in full:

June 5, Silverstone, Great Britian
July 3, Navarra, Spain
July 17, Paul Ricard, France

New for 2011 is the GT Endurance Series, promoted by SRO and consisting of five races of between three and 24 hours for GT3 and GT4 machines. The schedule:
April 15-17, Monza, Italy
May 21-22, Navarra, Spain
July 28-31, 24 Hours of Spa, Belgium
August 26-27, Magny Cours, France
October 7-9, Silverstone, Great Britain
Finally, a support series to all three of the above at various times this year will be the one-make Lamborghini Super Trofeo, sponsored (like the GT Endurance Series) by Blancpain watches. New driver classifications based on FIA guidelines will be introduced in 2011, with competing drivers given Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze status, depending on their experience. Lamborghini will also introduce a Rookie category for new drivers who have not previously competed. The Gallardo-based series will visit the following tracks:
April 17, Monza, Italy
June 5, Silverstone, Great Britain
July 17, Paul Ricard, France
July 31, 24 Hours of Spa, Belgium
October 2, Hockenheim, Germany (ADAC GT Masters)
October 30, Circuit de Catalunya, Spain (International GT Open)
